A FREE roller derby session led by the North Wales Roller Derby league is being held at the Deeside Leisure Centre on Sunday.

The two hour session – which will run from 6 to 8pm on February 9 – is completely free with people of all abilities welcome to attend as long as they are over 18 years old.

It is hoped that the taster session will help people to learn more about the full contact roller derby sport which combines skating with agility, strength and teamwork.

Experts in the sport will be on hand throughout to support those who attend, while experienced skaters will also be available to answer any questions and help people to get started.

Max Malcolm, North Wales Roller Derby Secretary said: “No one needs any previous skating experience to come along.

“We’ll support and teach the basics of skating, including how to fall and stop safely.

“We do advise to wear loose or stretchy clothing and to bring plenty of water. Skating around is sweaty work and is a great workout.”

No experience is necessary to attend the session while all the required kit – including roller skates – will be provided free of charge.

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two rotating teams of five members roller skating counter-clockwise around a track.

Games consist of a series of short match-ups, called ‘jams’, in which both teams designate a jammer – the player who wears a star on their helmet.

The jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team while players attempt to hinder the opposing jammer and at the same time assisting their own.

The sport is played by about 1,250 amateur leagues around the world, while the North Wales Roller Derby is one of those such leagues based in Flintshire.
