WREXHAM does not have the funds to repair its crumbling road network as motorists despair at the number of potholes in the county.

Last week, we asked Leader readers to name and shame the most hole-ridden roads in Wrexham and share their experiences of falling foul of them.

It came as, to coincide with National Pothole Day last week, a survey of 2,000 road users by Tarmac found the craggy gaps in the road surface were more irritating than tailgaters, drivers failing to use their indicators, and even breaking down.

Readers shared their horror stories about ruined tyres and damaged springs.

Siobhan Rogers said: “I drive round most of Wrexham and all the roads are really bad. Big holes everywhere I’ve got to have a tyre repaired from driving over them! I have no choice they are everywhere! I pay a lot of money to be on the road!”

Andrea Hurst said: “Son’s car hit a pothole yesterday and broke a spring, had to park up and wait three hours for RAC to come out. Car now needs repairing and about £40 spending on parts. He was lucky this didn’t cause an RTC.”

Many added that they want the council to prioritise repairing roads - with roads in Abermorddu, Bradley, Brymbo, Coedpoeth, Gresford, Gwersyllt, Llay, Queensway, Ruabon, Rhos, Summerhill, and Tanyfron, and more being identified as having notorious potholes.

Tracy Jones said: “Most of Wrexham is full of potholes council need to sort it out instead of putting fees on bins etc to get emptied.”

Mark Smith said: “Be easier to say which road does not have a pot hole or is fit to drive on. Wrexham roads must be some of the worst.”

Glyn Hughes said: “Some around Wrexham are like sink-holes they’re so big, your wheel drops in them. How cyclists and bikers haven’t had serious injuries as far as I know is a miracle. Roundabouts seem to be worst, Bradley Rd, roundabout as you come off the 483 for Ruabon.”

Julie Pettigrew said: “From Wrexham to Gwersyllt, just after the roundabout by the old metal box/new housing estate. Nightmare when it’s rained as you can’t see it till you hit it. Which I have a few times

Reise Tourer added: “Julie Pettigrew hit that one yesterday in the rain. Thought the tyre had blown and suspension was going to break. Massive bang.”

Benjamin Jones said: “The council have neglected the road’s for so long , it’s now a massive problem over most of Wrexham.

Carol Griffiths: Wrexham and Flintshire C.C. TAKE NOTE what’s the point in paying road tax when your driving on dirt tracks?”

Wrexham Council says all roads are inspected and damage is scheduled for repair - but the money is just not available to fix all holes.

Darren Williams, Head of Service for Environment, said: “We have noted previously that we are maintaining an ageing road network, but do not have the funds to carry out full planned repairs on large parts of that network.

“All roads are inspected in accordance with our adopted Highway Safety Inspection Policy, and defects which meet the defined criteria are recorded and programmed for repair.”
