MELIDEN booked their place in the Premier Cup third round thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 home win over Cerrugydrudion.

The Miners’ had to be at their resolute best to reach the next stage of the competition at the expense of their Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Premier Division rivals, ending a run of disappointing results in recent weeks.

Despite the eventual result it was the away side who started the brighter, and they went ahead after just eight minutes courtesy of a neat finish from Lian Roberts.

This was met by a good response from the hosts, who gradually began to dictate proceedings and found a leveller on 35 minutes when Luke Alden made the most of some space to find the corner.

After the break saw the home side get their noses in front for the first time on 52 minutes through a Liam Hughes strike, and they managed to hold firm in the face of some stern pressure in the closing stages to reach the semi-final stage.

There was no such luck for Y Glannau, who exited the competition following a 7-0 home loss at the hands of Llansannan.

Veteran striker Geraint Jones once again proved his worth to Tom Lewis’ side with a tremendous hat-trick during the rout, with a brace from Ifan Jones and a solitary Griff Roberts effort other notable highlights from the tie.

Sannan player Elis Vaughan is on the road to recovery following a severe leg break suffered last week, with the standout successfully coming through surgery.
