A DEESIDE ice skating club made history is it's teams were crowned Welsh and British Champions in the same year.

Deeside Synchronised Ice Skating Club was flying the flag for Wales at the Britannia Cup last and has completed a momentous and historic double.

The event took place between January 11 and 13 - and was held at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham.

It included several teams from across the UK and from aboard - including the USA, was broadcasted live on the BBC iPlayer.

Fantastic performances from the club's four teams brought home great results - with the Deelites leading the way with Gold in its first year in the intermediate category to become the British champions.

The Deelites, already crowned Welsh champions last year, blew away the competition to lead the field with "a mesmerising, fast paced tango routine with plenty of enthusiasm".

The Leader:

Close behind were the Angels - securing a hard fought fourth place in the Juvenile category, narrowly missing out on the bronze which they had secured earlier in the season at Alexandra Palace.

In its first ever performance and competition in the beginner category - the Cherubs drew glowing reviews from viewers on the BBC iPlayer to secure fourth place - cruelly missing a podium place by less than a point.

It was also the Halos first outing in the adult category - with an solid start to the season placing 11th out of 15.

All four teams will be competing next at the Scottish International held in Dumfries in early in February - with high hopes of more medals to bring home to Deeside.

Darell Jones, chairperson of the club, said “I’m so proud and privileged to be part of such a friendly and professional club which develop, encourage and enhance young talent in such a positive manner.

"These skaters have made friends from across the county and beyond for life."

He also thanked the club's sponsors - Gardner Aerospace and Aura Leisure - for their continued support.

Head coach, Vicki Usherwood added: “This achievement is three years of commitment, dedication and determination showing strength and persistence as a team who are go from strength to strength.

"These skaters have come through our development program and have proven what dedication and practice can achieve."

Deeside Synchro Club welcomes new members who have achieved Learn to Skate Grade 5 or above.
