VANDALS are targetting a Flintshire landmark which local people hope to turn into a community facility.

Shotton Steelworks' John Summers building has suffered a spate of recent vandalism - including arson and graffiti.

The Enbarr Foundation, led by Vicki Roskams, launched a campaign in 2018 to reopen the Grade II listed facility to the public.

The local enterprise group has about £5.2million to spend on turning it into a community hub - but the constant costs of repairing the work of vandals is having a devastating impact.

The Leader:

Mrs Roskams said: "I have spent the past two days and many of the holidays mending fences and brickwork of something which I am trying to secure and create for the communities and those at risk to help get them the support."

Groups let off fireworks on the site over New Year's Eve - something Mrs Roskams said nearly set the building on fire.

A stair case in the building has already suffered fire damage following a suspected arson attack.

Vandals have also sprayed graffiti on many of its walls, something Mrs Roskams has put a positive spin on.

The Leader:

She said: "I must say the graffiti is quite interesting.

"Someone is quite artistic, and I could see potential of them helping redevelop the project as they are really good."

And the appeal has gone to everyone who has and continues to vandalise the site.

"I ask for these individuals to stop using your energy negatively, and instead come and talk to ourselves and see how we can help use your energies positively to rebuild this magnificent site for future generations to enjoy - rather than tear it down."

It was built in 1907 and once employed 10,000 people.
