A FLINTSHIRE athlete has been given a top title as the Queens list of New Year’s Honours are revealed.

Amongst the sports stars across the nation given OBE recognition in the Queen’s Honours List, which was announced on December 27, was Flint’s taekwondo champion Jade Jones.

Jade, 26, was one of 229 people selected across the UK to be given an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to Taekwondo and Sport.

The taekwondo prodigy is no stranger to the royal list of recognition, as Jade was previously given an MBE following her Olympic accomplishments in London six years ago at the age of 18.

Having retained her Olympic title in Rio in 2016, Jones finally claimed an elusive first world title in Manchester in May and will target a third straight Olympic crown in Tokyo next year.

“There were times I doubted if I could ever do it,” Jones admitted in the wake of her most recent triumph.

She said: “This is only going to increase my motivation to go on and make it three Olympic titles in a row.”

Congratulating Jade Jones on her achievement, Welsh Secretary Simon Hart said: “Jade has become one of the best-known sporting personalities of the decade since her triumphs at the London and Rio Olympic Games.

“She is an inspiration not only within taekwondo but to all hopeful athletes due to her discipline and dedication. A commitment that has allowed her to bounce back from adversity and secure some of her sports greatest titles, including most recently her first World Championships.

“Congratulations Jade on your momentous achievement.”
