The A55 has been cleared but congestion may remain in Flintshire following an accident.

Traffic Wales announced just before 3.50pm on Sunday that both lanes of the westbound carriageway at junction 33 (Northop) were blocked following the incident.

A spokesman said traffic officers and police had been called to the scene, before warning major congestion had begun to build.

Just before 4.15pm Traffic Wales confirmed the tailbacks following the incident had reached more than three miles long, and urged people to avoid the area.

Then at about 5.40pm Traffic Wales confirmed the collision had been cleared and emergency services and traffic officers had left the scene.

Heavy congestion remained however, a spokesman said.

Traffic Wales was also alerted to two other A55 incidents in Flintshire on the same evening - a broken down vehicle in lane one of the A33 at Northop westound, which was removed shortly afterwards, and a blockage on the eastbound off-slip at junction 31 (Caerwys) due to a vehicle having driven the wrong way down the slip road.

This vehicle was moved safely off the road shortly after, a spokesman for Traffic Wales said.
