JUNIOR footballers from Wrexham are to tackle the summit of Snowdon in a bid to raise £3,500 so they can attend a European tournament.

Llay United Under 10s have been invited to the competition which is being staged in Oisterwijk in Holland from May 30 next year.

The team has already amassed a number of successes in tournaments in Wrexham and North Wales, but now face a mammoth fundraising effort for what will be a tour of a lifetime and have enlisted the help of the public.

Coach Darren Brooks said: "There's a lot of hard work to be done so we've planned a number of fundraisers. The big one will be a sponsored walk up Snowdon next Easter. We've chosen to do it then as the lads are only nine and 10, so we thought we'd better wait for milder weather for our climb.

"The boys will also be doing some bag packing at Tesco and Sainsburys and we've also set up a JustGiving crowdfunding page to help us on our way."

The Leader:

Since their formation three years ago Llay United's junior side have gone from strength to strength in the Wrexham Youth League under the guidance of Darren and fellow coaches Alex Peake, Adam Williams and Greg Everall.

On the back of their accomplishments they were invited to take part in the prestigious Oisterwijk tournament, but Darren explained: "It will cost thousands in expenses for the team to attend, once transportation costs, hotels and other requirements are taken into account and we estimate it will be around £3,500.

"We're a junior club run by volunteers and parents so we are in desperate need of support to give the boys and girls this once in a lifetime opportunity to attend a tournament in a foreign country.

"We've won six tournaments across North Wales and that success has been recognised by being invited to take part in this event in Holland."

Darren says any contribution large or small is greatly appreciated. Go to www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/llayutdu10s?utm_id=1&utm_term=DQG4N5aBx
