AN NFU Cymru member from Flintshire has been announced as the winner of the first Dafydd Jones Memorial Cup which is awarded for the greatest contribution to agriculture in Clwyd.

Terrig Morgan MBE, from Treuddyn, was presented with the award at a recent county conference by NFU Cymru Clwyd County Chairman Dewi Jones and the late Dafydd Jones’ son, Sion.

The Dafydd Jones Memorial Cup was launched earlier this year by the NFU Cymru Clwyd county branch in memory of their late county chairman, Dafydd Jones, of Pencoed Ucha, who suddenly died in February 2019.

Dafydd had courageously battled with myeloma for the previous 18 months but had, with sheer determination, taken on the role of Clwyd County Chairman in December 2018.

The Treuddyn farm Terrig, his wife Gwyneth, son Edward and daughter Sara call home has been in the family since the 1860s.

The site is now run by Edward Morgan, making him the fifth generation to farm there.

In 1949, Terrig’s father milked 24 cows, before going out of milk in the 1960s.

In 1975, Terrig took over from his father and in 1980 went back in to milk production.

Today, 240 cows are milked in a modern unit and followers are also home reared.

Terrig followed in his father’s footsteps and became NFU Cymru Clwyd county chairman in 1984, the youngest member to take the position at 34-years-old.

He was also NFU Council delegate in 1990 and sat on the North Wales Regional Milk Board.

As well as this, Terrig was chair of the dairy committee, that included UK-level responsibilities and steered a shift towards working directly with the supermarkets.

He was instrumental in the introduction of the Red Tractor logo on milk bottles.

Terrig sits on a number of committees and became a Milk Marque representative in 1998.

He is also currently chair of the Co-op Supply Chain Committee and in 2002 he was Chair of the Welsh Government Dairy Strategy Group and the Agri Food Partnership.

At the same time, Terrig was also a member of DEFRA’s Milk Task Force. He was the farm management committee chairman of the International Dairy Federation where he wrote a book which was the precursor to the farm assurance scheme.

He was also involved in ‘The White Stuff’ campaign which has seen great success across major cities like London, and was previously a demonstration farm for Farming Connect. He remains still a Farming Connect mentor today.

No stranger to awards, Terrig won the FUW cup in 2010 for his services to the industry as well as being a finalist for the Syr Bryner Award in 2017. He was awarded an MBE for Services to the Dairy Industry in 2008.

Terrig is heavily involved with the Royal Welsh Show Society and has been national chairman of The Council for Awards of Royal Agricultural Societies, and remains a member.

He is chief steward for Beef Shorthorns at the show as well as being a member of the advisory committee.

Terrig is currently chairman of the RWAS Clwyd Grassland Event to be held in Llysfasi in 2020 and fundraising as part of Clwyd’s feature county role for the Royal Welsh Show in 2020.

Off the farm, Terrig is chairman of the Governors of Ysgol Terrig and is also a governor at Ysgol Maes Garmon.

He also sits on the parish council and has done so for 35 years.

On presenting the award to Terrig, NFU Cymru Clwyd county chairman Dewi Jones said: “The Dafydd Jones Memorial Cup is awarded for the NFU Cymru Clwyd member who has made the biggest contribution to agriculture and it is very fitting that Terrig Morgan should be the inaugural winner of this award.

"Terrig has made an enormous contribution to the NFU and the wider dairy industry over many years; his endeavour and dedication to his work saw him frequently travelling between Clwyd, London, Brussels, Spain and many other places to champion the cause of farmers here in Clwyd and further afield.

"Terrig is a worthy winner of this title and it is a fitting tribute for all that he has achieved.”
