A PAIR of Wrexham Glyndwr University students have hit the airwaves for a marathon record bid to raise funds for charity.

Matt Winson and Daniel Fisher are showcasing a range of live during a 24-hour broadcast on community station Calon FM at the university's Plas Coch campus.

The duo began rocking around the clock at 7am this morning and during the duration of their show they plan to host 23 acts from across North Wales, Manchester and Liverpool as they aim for a Guiness World record.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Llay-based charity Yourspace, which helps children and young people with autism.

Matt, 31, from Caernarfon, is studying a BA (Hons) in Radio Production, while Daniel, 24, from Wrexham, is taking a degree course in Financial Technology Management.

Local bands like bi-lingual act The GOGS and Megan Lee of Coedpoeth-based country band Blue Genes are to feature. Matt says the aim is to introduce at least 100 different live performances with one local band, Tillerama, even planning to write a new song on air before performing it for the first time.

"We’re looking to have a band in each hour and each band will do at least four short shows interspersed with an interview," said Matt.

"It is a great opportunity to gain some attention for not only Wrexham’s only community radio station, but all the great unsigned musicians that we will be having on as well as raising money for our charity of choice."

The event has taken weeks of planning and while there won’t be any lugging of heavy drum kits and equipment as all performances are acoustic, Matt admitted: "A 24-hour show isn't easy to host and I have stocked up on the coffee. We are truly excited about the experience and can’t wait to showcase all the talented musicians we’re having on.”
