CONCERNS have been raised over the increasing number of rough sleepers in Deeside.

Members of the public have expressed their worry for those who are sleeping rough across Connah's Quay and Shotton.

One male is reported to have been there for several weeks.

Cllr Gill Faulkner said she has received many phone calls from concerned residents who are worried about these people who are facing a cold winter out on the streets.

She said: "We have quite a few around Deeside this year but this time last year we only had the one who was helped straight away and taken to a hostel.

"It's very worrying, it's so cold out."

Cllr Bernie Attridge said he too is worried about the rising number of people on the streets.

He added: "I'm very concerned. At the housing scrutiny last week I asked for an urgent paper of which was agreed and will go to December meeting.

"It wasn't long ago Flintshire County Council prided themselves with having no rough sleepers.

"We just get told they have refused emergency accommodation but im sorry we can't except that we need a multi agency approach homelessness and rough sleeping should not just be seen as a housing issue."

Rough sleepers have been seen sleeping in doorways of shops in Connah's Quay and Shotton.

The Leader has previously reported that Flintshire takes pride in helping rough sleepers, so they do not have to stay on the street.

Neal Cockerton, Chief Officer Housing and Assets said: “An Officer from the Council’s Homelessness Team has been in contact with the gentleman and he has been provided with the appropriate support and guidance and also directed to other organisations that may be able to offer him further assistance and advice."
