DOZENS of people turned up to remember Deeside's forgotten heroes in a special commemoration event.

The Leader previously reported that Mavis Williams, researcher for the Connah’s Quay interservices committee, completed her research into the names of the WW1 soldiers on the Connah’s Quay and Shotton War Memorial to find out about their lives and how they died.

During her investigation, she found 23 missing names, which she wanted to add onto the current memorial, so they will not be forgotten.

The Leader:

This month, after receiving funding to get a special plaque made, an unveiling was held at the Connah's Quay and Shotton war memorial.

Cllr Ian Dunbar said: "It went down very well. There were quite a few children there from the Welsh School in Shotton.

"It was a very successful day.

"The chairs from Shotton town council and Connah's Quay council laid the capsule and we all went to the Civic Hall for some light refreshments. Everything went down very well, we were lucky."

The Leader:

During the event, the 23 names were read out and a time capsule was also placed under the poppy bed which included children's work from World War One to commemorate the centenary.

Jack Sargeant AM added: “I was honoured to attend the unveiling of the new commemoration stone for the additional 23 people from our community who fought in WW1.

"It is only right we remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we all cherish.”
