SCHOOLCHILDREN in Llangollen were delighted to receive a letter from a famous natural historian.

The year five and six pupils at Ysgol Y Garth chose to look at the ocean as their topic this term, and the classes have been paying particular attention to the state our ocean is in due to plastic pollution.

After spending weeks learning about the effects of plastic pollution and the ongoing concern for the ocean, the pupils decided to take action.

Year five and six teacher Ashley Ryan said: "We have put in place an action plan to reduce our use of plastic to a minimum, weekly litter picks and making sure the school are recycling and using the correct bins.

"We contacted Plastic Free Wrexham and they gave us lots of advice for the action plan and explained how we could eventually work towards a school plastic free status in the future.

"The pupils feel passionately that we, as people, are the cause of plastic pollution and are hoping to make an impact in any way that we can.

"After hearing about the work Sir David Attenborough does, the pupils felt inspired to write to let him know about our school action plan and to thank him for the outstanding work he does to raise awareness.

"We received a handwritten letter back from Sir David Attenborough thanking us for our hard work and passion towards wanting to make a change.

"As a class we were shocked but delighted with his response to our letter and that he kindly signed our class photograph.

"We would like to thank Sir David Attenborough for taking the time to respond as this has motivated us to continue to work hard and keep our use of plastic to a minimum."

In the letter, Sir David said: “Dear years five and 6, thank you for all you are doing to help deal with plastic pollution.”
