READERS have had their say over plans for a town park which would create over 100 jobs and make it a ‘huge tourist attraction’.

The Leader reported previously how the proposals for Wepre Park and Wepre Lane in Connah’s Quay were revealed at a meeting of the town council, with ideas ranging from a water park to Go Ape facilities.

Councillors heard how around 200 affordable houses would be built in order to pay for the regeneration project, turning Wepre Park into a ‘huge tourist attraction’.

Readers took to the Leader’s Facebook page to share their views on the scheme.

Ange Gsd Nock said: “I made the move back to Wepre area because it is beautiful.

“But it is fast becoming a place for tourists, not locals.

“There are plenty of places to build these things that are far away from people’s homes. It’s an awful idea.”

Michelle Davies Prev Griffiths commented: “Awful, awful ideas. This area does not need any further homes due to the already struggling infrastructure.

“Wepre is and will continue to generate interest without the need for all these get rich quick ideas these people have.”

Catherine Lindop said: “Get a supermarket back in the empty old Somerfield first - more amenities needed before you cram even more houses in.”

Natasha Sheldon Lane said: “No! The only thing that needs improving is the parking facilities for the thousands of people that visit the park.

“The park is a beautiful safe space for children, it gives them the opportunity to play and run without the dangers of traffic.

“There’s not many places like that anymore - leave it alone.”

Beccy Cheung added: “I’m horrified by this to be honest - Wepre Park is an unspoilt oasis and is perfect as it is.

“It doesn’t need a water park or a shop and much as Go Ape type places are great, we don’t need the tranquillity of the park and the brilliant habitat it provides for the animals that live there ruined by having people up in the trees.

“If they really care about regeneration for Deeside there are plenty of rundown buildings and areas they could work on that would bring other parts of the area up to the incredible standard of Wepre Park and make Deeside a far better place to live.”

Speaking at the town council meeting, Cllr Bernie Attridge said: “I feel it’s a great idea. For myself, it’s looking at the bigger picture, as money is tight. Wepre Park is a jewel in the crown for Connah’s Quay, we are the envy. I would like to see community benefits and you speaking to residents.”

Cllr Andy Dunbobbin added: “I think it’s a welcome investment in Connah’s Quay especially regarding children’s education and the wellbeing of the community. I think it will make the community more tight and is a positive move forward.”
