LEGENDARY Welsh rock musician and poet Geraint Jarman brings his prolific talent to Theatr Clwyd this December.

There is no-one who can match Geraint Jarman’s immense and continuing effect and influence on Welsh language music over the past half a century.

As a highly original composer, poet, performer and television producer he has had a defining effect on every decade of the story of Welsh language youth culture.

Born in 1950 and fired up by an early sighting of the electric Bob Dylan in the mid-sixties he emerged as a teenage modernist Welsh language beat poet prowling the streets of Cardiff and just as quickly turned to songwriting and performing.

By 1969 he had hooked up with co-conspirators Meic Stevens (another of Wales’s major cultural icons) and Heather Jones (future wife and folk heroine) to form the Bara Menyn - initially a joke band that quickly became hugely successful due to their countercultural cool and top psych pop songs.

The band soon had to be jettisoned as he turned to acting and poetry at the turn of the decade.

Famous on stage and screen in the early and mid-seventies for his acting the classic rock n roll ‘Jarman’ persona finally appeared fully formed in 1976 with the appearance of his debut album ‘Gobaith Mawr y Ganrif’ (Saviour of the Century).

Rock, new wave, reggae, dub and country rock were all present and correct on a brilliant series of albums he recorded for Sain records between 1976 to 1984.

In the late eighties he gave up performing and recording to concentrate on television production creating the iconic FIDEO9 music series in 1988

Following a 15 disk career spanning box set on Sain Records in the early 2000’s reminding everyone of his amazing legacy he returned to full time recording and performing as a solo artist with ‘Brecwast Astronot’ appearing on Ankstmusik in 2011 an album that was instantly recognized as being up there with his best work.

Over the next seven years Geraint created four further solo albums of wide-ranging scope and style with his band, trusted producer Frank Naughton and choice collaborators like Gareth Bonello, Griff Lynch and Peredur ap Gwynedd which make it clear that he is in the middle of an astonishingly creative rebirth that is flourishing and on-going.

The latest release, the reggae album Cariad Cwantwm appeared in Summer 2018 was a forward-looking triumph.

Geraint Jarman can be seen at Theatr Clwyd (Clwyd Room) on Friday, December 6 at 8pm.

Tickets, priced from £15, are available from the Theatr Clwyd Box Office on 01352 344101 or at www.theatrclwyd.com
