AN Olympic silver medallist has visited a primary school in Wrexham to deliver an inspirational assembly to the children.

The former world number one women's modern pentathlete, Samantha Murray, visited Ysgol y Waun, in Chirk, to discuss the benefits of fresh and healthy food as part of the recent opening of a new Aldi store in Ruabon.

During her visit, Samantha - who won a silver medal for Team GB in the women's modern pentathlon at London 2012 - also discussed her experience of the Olympics and about her challenging training regime as an Olympian.

Speaking after her visit, the Team GB hero said: "I've had a fantastic time with the children, they were an absolute delight.

"It was great to talk to them about the importance of eating healthily and how it can be fun to prepare your own meals.

"Hopefully I've also managed to inspire the pupils to keep active and try different sports."

The 30-year-old also presented a donation of fresh fruit and snacks to Ysgol y Waun, which were courtesy of the Ruabon Aldi store that opened in September.

Samantha's visit to the school comes as part of Aldi's partnership with Team GB for their 'Get Set to Eat Fresh' initiative which hopes to inspire 1.2 million school children between the ages of five to 14 years to learn more about the benefits of eating fresh, healthy food.

Aldi store manager, Robert Birch, added: "Since opening the Ruabon store at the beginning of September, we've had a really successful couple of weeks.

"It's been great to meet more of our new customers and share our everyday amazing products with them. I'm also thrilled that we've been able to support Ysgol y Waun through our partnership with Team GB."

The newly opened Aldi store is also calling upon local charities and food banks in the Ruabon area to register with Neighbourly - a not-for-profit organisation that links businesses to charitable organisations in their community.

Those who register will be able to receive regular donations of surplus food from the supermarket up to five days a week.

Any charities in Ruabon that wish to partner up with the new Aldi store should email aldi@neighbourly.com.
