HOLYWELL pupils were given a glimpse into their local council and the services it is responsible for.

Students from Ysgol Maes Y Felin's school council recently visited the council chambers in Mold.

The children had the opportunity to have a tour of the chambers by the Chair, Councillor Marion Bateman, and her consort, Councillor Haydn Bateman, and were given a full outline of the role of the county council in priorities including education, transport, and social services.

The Leader:

Tamsin Nellist, one of the teachers who accompanied the pupils on the visit, said: “The hospitality extended by the Chair and her consort was fantastic.

"The children were treated to refreshments, and were given the opportunity to wear the chain, strike the gavel and have a full tour of the chambers and associated buildings.

"It was a brilliant experience for our pupils to learn more about how their local council works. They were so enthusiastic, and it was wonderful to see them asking questions about different aspects of the council’s operations.

"I think it has been a valuable opportunity for them to see the complex issues faced by the council and to compare some of the procedures for dealing with different aspects with how they operate as a school council."

The school council have planned a programme of activities for the upcoming year including a Christmas disco, fundraising for local and national charities, a Christmas fair, and raising money for school funds to buy iPad covers.

They are also looking to update the school’s behaviour charter and are working in conjunction with the high school, Ysgol Treffynnon, on a number of shared initiatives.
