A CHARITY that recycles unwanted white goods in Wrexham and Flintshire wants your help in its aim to reduce pollution and protect the environment.

Refurbs, which recently opened a store on Henblas Street in Wrexham, diverts waste from landfill through the collection and reconditioning of white goods and household appliances through donations. Every year, hundreds of tonnes of waste are saved from going to landfill and the reconditioned items are sold at affordable prices, which helps reduce pollution and protect the environment, promoting sustainable waste management practices in turn tackling climate change. Climate change is affecting the UK and the rest of the world through changes to the climate mainly the rise in global temperatures largely due to the greenhouse gases produced by human activities. If items such as washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges and freezers are not disposed of or recycled appropriately they have a hugely negative impact on the environment. Items such as these in landfill release many toxins such as lead, mercury, and cadmium which are harmful to the ozone layer. Fridges and freezers if not disposed of correctly can release harmful greenhouse gases contributing to climate change. And Since they do not naturally bio-degrade, they remain in landfill taking up a large amount of space.

As an organisation in the past 12 months Refurbs has diverted 702 tonnes from landfill and supported 4,116 volunteer hours. With the new site in Wrexham, the charity is hoping that these numbers will significantly increase over the next 12 months. The revamped unit covers 2,750 sq. foot and has created six new jobs with additional opportunities for volunteers from stockroom and retail positions to assisting with the reconditioning and recycling of the appliances.

Karen Balmer Chief Executive is looking forward to seeing the difference this exciting venture can make, she said:

"The aspiration for Refurbs is to provide low cost products to those on low incomes in Wrexham and to enable people to be able to buy affordable basic and essential items.

"It is an exciting venture which we are very much looking forward to seeing the difference it can make and assisting the people of Wrexham."
