A WREXHAM choir have just returned from a highly successful tour to Germany, where they performed two concerts in front of hundreds of people

The Rhos Orpheus Male Choir and the Märkischer Kreis region in central North Rhine-Westphalia, have links that date back to 1976, with several cultural exchanges taking place as part of the former 'twinning' arrangements. Three members of The Orpheus and one from Germany have been part of every exchange that has taken place over the last 43 years.

The 58 strong party, led by Musical Director Eifion Wyn Jones and Rachel Phillips (Deputy Musical Director and Accompanist) travelled over to mainland Europe via a ferry from Hull to Rotterdam, before arriving in the beautiful city of Ludensheid.

During the stay, two concerts were arranged, and held in front of a combined audience of 500. The first was at the Jesus Christus Church in Meinerzhagen and was a programme shared with mixed sex choirs, Volmequelle Sherl and Projekt Choir Wales. The second concert was at the very impressive St Vitas Church in Lette and was shared with Mannerchor, Lyra Lette (a male choir) and a ladies choir, Frauenchor Harmonie St. Magnus.

In both concerts The Orpheus received prolonged standing ovations by the very appreciative audiences. The programme was varied, including traditional Welsh pieces and a wide selection songs which demonstrated the choir’s ability to perform many different styles.

Chairman, Rob Ratcliffe said: "We’ve had a fantastic tour to Germany, further enhancing the wonderful friendship we have enjoyed over the past 43 years.

"Also the choir’s international reputation reached an all time high with superb quality disciplined performances. It was indeed a privilege to share the stages with four local choirs, each with their impressive, distinctive style.

"We enjoyed wonderful hospitality from our hosts and look forward to welcoming such good friends once again to Wales soon."

Principal soloist, Alf Gladman, performed admirably in both concerts, delighting the audiences with ‘Safwn yn y Bwlch’ and ‘O Gymru’.

The choir's next performance will be at the prestigious Victory Hall, Hanley on Sunday, October 27, alongside the Fodens Band.
