A WELL-known re-use centre in Wrexham is closing its doors at the end of October due to its director’s health concerns and costs.

The New 2 You Centre has been operating in the town since December 2004 and has assisted those on low incomes, many including pensioners and individuals on benefits, by offering affordable, recycled, second hand furniture and household goods.

The not-for-profit organisation is made up of a team of community volunteers and is located on the Whitegate Industrial Estate.

Director of New 2 You, Rita Walker, 55, from Wrexham, said it will be the end of an era, as she prepares to hand over the keys on November 19.

She said: “My on-going health issues have played a huge part in deciding to close the centre.

“I’ve already suffered from three heart attacks, the first one being when I was just 21 years of age, as well as being involved in a motorbike accident a few years back.”

With thousands of pounds annually in rent, plus rates, utilities, vehicle operation, insurances and other costs, the group of volunteers have had to work extremely hard to ensure that they make ends meet, as they receive no external financial support.

Mrs Walker, added: “Another factor in our closure is due to not being able to compete with the big co-operate companies anymore.

“It’s costing us too much to stay open, which has proven difficult when business has been quiet.

The Leader:

“The lack of volunteers, the £1,527 per month in rent and the recent purchase of our new £6,000 delivery van has proven too much.

“We receive no funding whatsoever.”

News of the closure was announced via Facebook and has been met with great dismay from customers, who expressed their disappointment.

Deb Halligan Tilden, a frequent user of the re-use centre, said: “So sorry to hear this, over the years you have provided my family with so many things we could not have afforded to buy elsewhere.

“Thank you for all that you have done and I hope you enjoy a healthy and restful time now. Best wishes and many thanks.”

Another saddened former user, Juliet Robinson, said: “Such sad news as I know your shop is invaluable to the ones that need it.

“I hope you feel better soon and enjoy your retirement.”

Ann Phillips, said: “Sorry to hear this news. To think of all the help you have given to people including myself and my family. You will be sadly missed.

Elaine Dittman, said: “Very sad news. You provide an excellent and much needed resource in the area. Sorry to see you go.”

One former user of the centre, Katrina Jones, added: “Such a shame, as it was a massive help when we first moved into our first home together.

“Thank you for all your help.”

Cllr Carrie Harper, of Queensway Ward, said: “I understand that Rita Walker (the director) has taken the difficult decision to close the New 2 You on health grounds. Since hearing the news many local residents have expressed their disappointment about losing it.”
