CONCERNS have been raised about the safety of pedestrians on a Flintshire roundabout.

The issues revolves around the roundabout in Broughton joined by traffic leaving and joining the A55 close to Broughton shopping park.

The concerns are that cars coming on to the roundabout from the A55 slip too fast are swerving off and could hit pedestrians.

Schoolchildren living on the nearby Parc Jasmin use this route to get to Broughton Primary School, and a local councillor believes it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt.

Cllr Klaus Armstrong-Braun said: "Cars are coming onto the roundabout from the A55 far too past, and losing control of their steering.

"The barrier has been smashed twice in recent weeks and I'm really fearful for the safety of pedestrians, particularly schoolchildren, who use the path just off the roundabout - it's a disaster waiting to happen."

Schoolchildren living on the nearby Parc Jasmin estate were said to be using a shortcut through Broughton country park which meant they did not have to walk by the roundabout.

But the Leader reported in July how the route was suddenly blocked by a fence erected by Broughton Community Council, leaving children no option to walk close to the roundabout.

And Cllr Armstrong-Braun says Broughton Community Council should discuss the option of making a safe route to school through the country park, instead of blocking the route off.

He said: "I'd like to see Broughton Community Council be open to the idea of helping to put a concrete path through the park, as well as street lights, so it meets safe routes to school criteria.

"As well as being a safer route to school, away from speeding cars and harmful nitrogen oxide emissions, it would also be a much shorter route for families from this estate to go and enjoy the country park."

The roundabout is the responsibility of the Welsh Government's North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency.

A Welsh Government spokesman said: “The safety of road users is a priority. We have already installed signs with an advisory 30 mph limit and we are now planning a speed limit review to assess if further measures are required.”

Broughton Community Council has been approached for a comment.
