A CONCERNED Wrexham resident said she felt compelled to video two men in a “Zombie-like” state after they had upset an elderly lady.

The woman, who preferred not to be named, told the Leader that she had been driving when she noticed the men, who were in a doorway outside the Sumang Oriental Store on Trinity Street and hoped the video would help highlight a problem that continues to blight the town.

She said: “They had upset an old lady as I was passing, so drove around to check that the lady was ok.

The Leader:

“I then videotaped them. Something needs to be done. Nobody should have to be afraid to enter the town.”

Wrexham Council introduced a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) covering the town centre and Rhosddu in 2016, which saw council staff and police given the power to issue fixed penalties of £100 for such offences.

The authority is currently consulting on plans to create a new enhanced order after the previous one lapsed.

The Leader:

However, last month, new figures revealed less than one in 20 fines handed out as part of a drive to cut down on issues such as drug taking and alcohol consumption were actually paid.

Wrexham Council was approached by the Leader for a comment.
