Chirk Railway Station has been recognised with a national award for the eighth time.

The station has been awarded an ‘outstanding’ in this year’s RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood Awards.

Friends of Chirk Station (FoCS) adopted the station 15 years ago, and has ever since been voluntarily looking after it.

They were on hand to receive the award at the Wales In Bloom 2019 awards ceremony held in Ystradgynlais.

FoCS volunteer, Christine Ashford, was pleased to see the group travelling home with an award again this year.

She said: “Friends of Chirk Station accepted their Outstanding Award in the RHS Its Your Neighbourhood category, on behalf of the community of Chirk.

“It’s the eighth such Outstanding IYN award that has come back to our community, over the past 15 years.

“Our thanks to everyone in Chirk who has contributed and supported this year’s entry.”

Wrexham Councillor for Chirk North, Councillor Frank Hemmings, said the work the FoCS group does is very important for the town.

“I think it’s important that people get a good first impression when they arrive in Chirk,” he said.

“The fact they’re volunteers, and they maintain such a high standard really is amazing and it is certainly very well-appreciated by everyone in Chirk.

“They do a very good job. Last year, they held a fantastic event for Armistice Day.

“They really are a credit to Chirk, it’s excellent.”

He added: “I use the station occasionally, and it’s amazing to see the results from their efforts with all the plants and the painting. Christine does an excellent job in organising everyone and keeping everyone motivated to continue the great work they do. It has been such a strong and well-supported group for many years now, and long may that continue.”
