Despite knowing I shouldn't do it to myself, I started - and completed - the latest Netflix original series, The I-Land.

I'd given myself that warning because I was one of the many left feeling cheated by the massive disappointment that was TV series of old, Lost. I'm still not over it either.

But I'm an optimist and was looking to fill a Sunday with some easy viewing.

The initial premise bears more than an uncanny resemblance to Lost, as a bunch of strangers wake up on the beach of a deserted island.

We soon learn none of them knows who they are or where they are. Tensions are high from the very off, as the first two characters to meet - played by Natalie Martinez and Kate Bosworth - are both suspicious and frosty.

Soon the full 10 are awake and trying to make sense of things, with items found in the sand by each arrival. So far, so very sci-fi by numbers.

I'm a bit distracted though. The acting is OTT, pretty camp at times, their identical outfits remain crisp and clean regardless of time or activities, the women wake up flawless and everyone is making those kind of decisions you just wouldn't. I'm cringing. But I'm in too deep and shamelessly loving it.

Episode three reveals all, sort of, and it all gets a bit more bonkers from there. I think the trailer gives the main twist away but I'll keep this review spoiler free.

The characters start to unravel, as memories of who they are come back, with the viewer getting insights courtesy of handy flashbacks.

There are plenty of 'really?' moments in almost every scene, but I didn't hate the show for them.

Ultimately there's a moral issue at the heart of The I-Land, one about second chances, and I must admit, considerable flaws aside, it did get me thinking.

I know this show has been deemed laughable by many but I've seen considerably worse done with bigger budgets and bigger names.

And unlike many other shows or films of its kind, The I-Land actually has an ending. A proper, non ambiguous ending. But it also left things lined up for series two if the figures add up and people vote with their remotes.

I shouldn't do it to myself but I totally would.
