A FLINTSHIRE resident has celebrated her 100th birthday with a small party and concert at her care home in Shotton.

Mary Gray turned 100 on Monday (September 16) with Hollybank Care Home holding a small party and concert in her honour to commemorate the special occasion.

She was joined by her family and close friends, while Councillor Marion Bateman and her consort, Councillor Haydn Bateman, also attended.

The Leader:

Mary Gray celebrated turning 100 with her family as well as with Councillors Marion and Haydn Bateman at the Hollybank Care Home.

Speaking to the Leader after the party, Bev Ellis, deputy manager of Hollybank Care Home, said: “It was a lovely afternoon.

“Mary is always laughing and never complains. She’s still independently mobile and walking by herself which is remarkable to see.

“She loves singing and so it was quite apt having two gentlemen coming in to sing for us and having the residents and their family members join in.”

Mrs Gray was born close to Liverpool city centre, and still has haunting memories of the Second World War where bombings caused the windows of their home to be blown out.

She then met her husband George with whom she married in 1940, having three children with. The family then moved to Broughton in 1953, remaining in Flintshire ever since.

Sadly, Mrs Gray’s husband, George, passed away suddenly at the age of 59 while the family were living in the Buckley area.

As well as her three children – Linda, John and David – Mrs Gray has eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
