PEOPLE in a position to help should help those in need, a councillor has said.

Councillors Doreen and David Mackie celebrated their golden wedding anniversary by giving back to those less fortunate.

The pair asked friends and family to provide ‘golden gifts’, instead of presents, which would then be donated to the Flintshire Foodbank.

Shotton Town Councillor Doreen Mackie told the Leader: “I just thought that at our age we don’t need presents, so I asked people to bring something golden to the party we had arranged.

“It was a lovely turnout and a lovely celebration so hopefully people will benefit from it.”

Over 300 items were received for the charity, which included golden syrup, gold blend coffee and Yorkshire gold tea bags.

Cllr Mackie added: “One year we made a golden hamper for a friend’s anniversary and so I thought I would suggest it and people responded.

“I didn’t expect to get so much. It was amazing, we had over 100 people turn up and we thought people would bring just one item, but we ended up with loads.

“We’ve filled the boot and the back of the car. I think it’s nice to be able to help those less fortunate, there’s time we all need a bit of help.

“I think if we are in a position to help, then we should.”
