Oswestry is preparing to host more than 100 free events for this year’s Heritage Open Days.

The events will include an archaeological dig at Oswestry Castle, a tour of Park Hall trenches, and various talks about the history and heritage of the town and its surrounding areas.

Mark Hignett, curator of Oswestry Town Museum, has played a major role in organising the activities in Oswestry for the annual UK event.

“It’s a great national programme we play a part in,” he said.

“So much so that we were mentioned in the 25th anniversary booklet with a two-page spread dedicated to Oswestry.

“I was also invited to speak at their 25th anniversary event.

“We have an eclectic mix of events and things for people to see over the two-week period.

“We will be providing free minibuses to out of town areas on the weekends.”

The huge programme of free events will shed light on the history and heritage of the town, something Mark believes is of interest to a lot of people.

He added: “I think it’s very important for the area. It gives people the opportunity to explore things that aren’t always open or accessible.

“It’s a family friendly way of giving people access to the history and heritage of Oswestry.

“The history of this area is of interest to a lot of people.

“If it wasn’t for the volunteers, all these events wouldn’t take place.”

“It has had fantastic support from Corrie Davies and Shropshire Council – we’re very grateful for her work to help in making this such a strong event.

“David Clough from Oswestry markets and Oswestry Town Council have been great too.”

Booklets for the event are available at Oswestry Museum in the Guildhall and Oswestry Visitor and Exhibition Centre.
