BRITAIN'S most prestigious cycle race is set to pass through Flintshire next week.

The OVO Tour of Britain will briefly pass through Saltney and Bretton, near Broughton, on Wednesday September 11.

The eight stage race will begin in Glasgow on September 7 and will finish in Manchester a week later.

The Tour of Britain has attracted world-class riders each September since it returned to the calendar in 2004.

And the likes of Sir Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome, Mark Cavendish, Geraint Thomas, Julian Alaphilippe, Tom Dumoulin, Caleb Ewan and Tom Boonen have all competed in the event.

This year, competitors will move through Flintshire along the A5104 in Saltney, past Airbus wing manufacturing plant before heading down Bretton Lane.

Flintshire Council said brief travel disruption in the the Saltney area is expected.

Steve Jones, chief officer Streetscene and transportation, said: "This year’s Tour of Britain cycle race will travel through Saltney and Bretton on Wednesday, September 11.

"The race is expected to reach the A5104 High Street via Chester at around 12pm, and then travel towards Broughton before turning onto Bretton Lane.

"This short section of the race is expected to take no longer than 20 minutes, but we are anticipating some delays during this period."
