A MUCH loved Wrexham grandad died as a result of a fall outside his home while taking the rubbish out, an inquest has heard.

Thomas Tomlinson, 91, who lived with his wife Edna on Stansty Road, had suffered from heart failure for about ten years, which had greatly impacted on his mobility.

John Gittins, coroner for North Wales (East and Central) told the hearing at Wrexham Guildhall, how Mr Tomlinson had put on his coat and cap to protect himself from the rain before he fell while taking out the rubbish to his bin.

Mr Gittins went on to say how the fall resulted in Mr Tomlinson being admitted to Wrexham Maelor hospital with a fractured hip, and while there, his condition gradually began to deteriorate, before he passed away on March 27.

In a statement read out by the coroner, Jenny Watson, his daughter-in-law, said Mr Tomlinson had never been formally diagnosed with dementia, but had began to show some signs and symptoms of the disease, including having hallucinations of seeing penguins on the ceiling while in hospital.

Mrs Watson went on to say that while in hospital, Mr Tomlinson didn’t understand that he needed to stay still in bed due to the nature of the hip fracture and that towards the end of his life grew increasingly tired saying he “just wanted to sleep”.

Reaching a conclusion of accidental death, Mr Gittins explained that despite suffering from bronchial pneumonia, heart failure and diabetes, the fall which resulted in the hip fracture had ultimately been the cause of Mr Tomlinson’s death.
