A TOWN mayor had the chance to try out a mobility scooter scheme for himself.

To celebrate the new fleet of mobility scooters at Shopmobility, the Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW) relaunched the service on Friday.

The relaunch follows the receipt of funding from the Welsh Government, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Wrexham Council to rejuvenate the fleet at AVOW’s Shopmobility.

The service enables members to explore Wrexham Town Centre with greater freedom to access shops and services. The range of equipment in the fleet will enable the service to fulfil the needs of a wider range of people and mobility issues.

Cllr Rob Walsh, mayor of Wrexham, visited Shopmobility at the relaunch and heard about the value of the service in the local community from both new and existing members.

The Mayor experienced first-hand the new fleet by driving a mobility scooter around Wrexham Bus Station.

He told the Leader: "They are very good and they're very nice to steer.

"I had a lovely drive around the bus station.

"For those who need it, I recommend using them - it is a really good way of getting around the town."

In addition to the town based mobility scooters, there is now a range of ‘Booty’ scooters and wheelchairs that are lightweight and collapsible for car boot storage, these are available for longer hire to assist members on holiday or out of the county.

Shopmobility continues to be an affordable service from an accessible location for the use of members throughout Wrexham County Borough and beyond.

The service operates on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am until 4pm and on the last Saturday of every month from 9.30am until 12.30pm.
