A WREXHAM man has appeared in court following a serious assault on a police officer over the weekend.

Appearing from custody at North East Wales Magistrates' Court in Mold, 25-year-old Meredydd Francis of School Lane in Southsea was charged with a Section 18 grievous bodily harm after an incident involving an officer from the North Wales Police Roads Policing Unit.

Helen Tench, prosecuting, said PC Richard Priamo was attempting to arrest Francis at his home address just before 8pm on Saturday when it is alleged the officer was seriously assaulted.

The officer, who was knocked unconscious during the alleged assault, remains in hospital with nerve damage, loss of vision in right eye and loss of use of his right arm.

She said the alleged attack involved PC Priamo being grabbed and thrown four feet in the air by Francis.

Andy Holliday, defending, urged the bench to consider bail for his client, who appeared in the dock with a number of clear facial injuries, but magistrates' chairman Paul Rutt said the seriousness of the alleged offence meant he was unable to do so and he remanded Lewis in custody to appear again at Mold Crown Court on September 6.
