Today the Leader introduces its last local trader as part of Independent Retailer Month.

Name: Mark Batten

Business: Wild Bird & Pets

Location: Mold Indoor Market

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 9am-5pm, except Thursday 9am-4pm

When did you open and why?

Twelve years ago, because we used to do the outdoor market. To progress in this business, we decided to do an indoor business as well. We spent several years going round all different markets. We don’t do outdoor anymore.

Why did you open in this location?

When we first started we were round the back. When you come into a market like this, everyone would be in the same process.

You start with where you can. If a stall comes open, its got to go to the stallholders first, then to the outdoor if no one wants to move.

But because we were only in a small location, as soon as the window came up with the bigger premises we decided to move.

The Leader:

Tell us about your business/what do you sell?

We mostly do wild bird food. That’s what we specialise in. We do quite a few different mixes. We also do caged birds and then dogs and cats, beds.

What’s your most memorable/proudest moment in business?

When we first moved into this section and progressed and got it going, it was one of the biggest moments for us.

Have you had any strange requests/quirky suggestions or stories from customers? We get asked for a lot of different things, like people thought these [dog leads] are belts.

This shop used to be a sewing machine shop quite a lot of years ago, so we have people asking for things like knicker elastic. We still get asked for sewing machine things.
