People are being reminded to dispose of substances in an appropriate manner following concerns over possible water contamination.

North Wales Fire and Rescue, Natural Resources Wales, Welsh Water and Wrexham Council were all involved in the investigation last week due to a Cefn Mawr resident’s concern.

A spokesman at Welsh Water, said: “Following a report from the fire service of an odour in Cefn Mawr, we dispatched a team to investigate the report.

“We carried out an extensive investigation on our network and did not find any evidence of contamination.

“However, as a precaution, we left equipment in place to vent the manhole (in Trevor) overnight to ensure any possible contamination was eliminated.

“While we did not detect any evidence of contamination, we would of course investigate any new complaint as a matter of urgency if reported to us.”

The Leader:

Alarmed residents feared that the contamination could have come from the Mansanto/Flexsys site in the area.

But a spokesman for Wrexham Council, said: “Officers have visited the area to investigate the matter, and it is likely that a substance has been inappropriately disposed in the sewer network, rather than the Flexsys/Monsanto site.

“We will continue to investigate the matter alongside partners in North Wales Fire and Rescue, Natural Resources Wales and Dŵr Cymru/Welsh Water.

“We would also remind members of the public that any substances should be disposed of in an appropriate manner, rather than via the sewer network.”
