FLINT residents are once again being encouraged to put on a display of scarecrows in a bid to be crowned the best in town.

The Flint Scarecrow Competition, now in its fourth year, returns on August 1 until August 31 which encourages residents to get creative by designing and showcasing a homemade scarecrow in their front gardens for passers-by to see.

Organisers say they hope it will be as popular as the previous years event which brings the community together.

Kirsty Smith, who launched the first competition in 2016, said: “I am very grateful to the support of all the people of Flint, especially a big thanks to all who have helped organise it with me as without them it would not be possible. Also, my two children Riley and Ava-Gwen who have pestered me to carry it on each year.”

Kirsty added that local businesses, friends and family have all kindly donated prizes – including a year’s supply of toilet roll from Essity Paper Mill in Oakenholt.

Other prizes include a free hair cut at Sarah Hurley Truth barbershop, vouchers to spend with various local businesses as well as a prize on behalf of Kirsty's dad Ian Armitage who donated a prize every year until he passed away in 2018.

She added: “The scarecrows have all been amazing and we love seeing them all no matter how big or small. I have great feedback from people saying how nice it is to go on a scarecrow hunt and spot them all.

“Overall, I feel it is the whole community who have made it work. We are looking forward to seeing this years entries.

Mrs Smith said for every scarecrow that is entered into the competition, she and her husband Neil will donate £1 to the British Heart Foundation.
