FIREFIGHTERS were called to tackle two vehicle fires on Tuesday afternoon, the causes of which "are not known".

A van was "well alight" at roadside on the A542, Horseshoe Pass in Llangollen when a North Wales Fire and Rescue Service (NWFRS) crew arrived to put it out. Further north, a crew was sent to Caerwys where a car was on fire near a pub and restaurant.

The fire service said it does not know the causes of both fires, adding that, while it is "normal" to see a rise in the number of fires in the summer period due to heat and dryness, some are deliberate.

Vehicle fires can also be caused by collisions, and problems with electrical wiring, the fuel system and discarded cigarettes.

An NWFRS spokesperson said: "We sent one crew from Wrexham to the Horseshoe Pass at 3.49pm on Tuesday after reports of a fire involving a van.

"The vehicle was well-alight upon arrival, and the fire was extinguished using a hose reel and breathing apparatus by 4.26pm.

"The vehicle suffered 100 per cent damage.

"At 7.16pm a crew from Rhyl was sent to a car that was on fire near the Traveller's Inn in Caerwys. Police were already in attendance.

"The fire was extinguished at 8.02pm. Police arranged for the vehicle to be delivered."
