DELYN'S MP has expressed concern that unemployment figures in the constituency increase further.

David Hanson MP said UK Government continues to fail Delyn in tackling rising unemployment.

Latest figures out from June 2019 showed that the total of unemployed claimants in Delyn stood at 1,255.

This represents a rate of 3.8 per cent of the economically active population aged 16-64.

Mr Hanson said: "I’m utterly infuriated by the incompetence the UK Government has shown in bringing down unemployment in Delyn.

"We now have 305 more people unemployed in our constituency than we did a year ago. Delyn now has a higher unemployment rate than the UK average and most worrying of all we have 265 young people without a job or in further education.

"It is becoming a regular occurrence for me to stand up in the Houses of Parliament and point out to the Ministers that unemployment may be falling nationwide, but they are being blinded by national statistics and some constituencies it continues to rise.

"A dedicated government would seek out areas where unemployment continues to rise and invest in their local economies. It comes as no surprise that those who are struggling are areas without a major city."

The equivalent UK claimant rate was 3.6 per cent. The UK unemployment rate, which includes people not claiming benefits and is estimated from survey data, was 3.8 per cent in March to May 2019.

The number of claimants in Delyn constituency is 305 higher than June 2018 and 65 higher than May 2019.

There were 265 claimants aged 18-24 in June 2019, 60 higher than June 2018.

Mr Hanson added: "Our towns and villages need investment to future proof them from the changes in the global economy. Moreover, our high streets need support to ensure that there are jobs for people and a prospect of long-term investment.

"Councils in Flintshire are working with the Welsh Government to try and plug the gap left by a neglecting UK Government, but this will not be enough in of itself.

"We need a UK Government that takes action on zero-hours contracts, that implements an industrial strategy for retail – a large employer in Delyn – and brings an end to ideologically driven austerity.

"Only then we will see people able to get ahead in life through work."
