A JOHNSTOWN school choir has been praised for its hard work in raising funds for good causes.

Ysgol Yr Hafod school choir, which is made up of about 40 members, has taken part in a number of activities since Christmas to help charities and local organisations.

As well as raising money for the Salvation Army over Christmas, the choir performed at a charity ball in April in support of Wrexham Autistic Children Society.

The school also raised £500 at a concert at Bethel Chapel in Ponciau for Christian Aid in May, as well as raising almost £1,500 at the annual all schools concert at the Stiwt - with all proceeds going to the Stiwt.

More recently the school raised £500 following a concert at St Mary's church in Johnstown, with all proceeds going to the church.

Chair of governors, Cllr David A Bithell, praised the choir, parents, staff and head of music Owain Smith for the hard work.

Mr Smith told the Leader: "I am very proud of them and our head teacher Alison Heal is very proud as well. "It is fantastic that they can contribute to the area and the parents are very supportive."
