ONE of Wales’s best known male voice choirs is set to reach a new audience of millions on the other side of the world.

Rhos Male Voice Choir will feature in the autumn on Japanese TV’s “Wonders of the World" series.

A crew from broadcaster TBS was in Rhos last week to film the choir in rehearsal and on stage as part of a documentary about Wales in the run up to the Rugby World Cup.

Choir secretary Geraint Phillips explained: “We were contacted by TBS who are making a programme about each of the countries who will be playing in the World Cup – and they wanted to show something of the culture of Wales – typified by the male voice choir tradition.

“It was an honour for the Rhos Male Voice Choir to be chosen.”

Producer Hanako Kuyama said she and her colleagues were blown away by the singing of Welsh classic hymn Gwahoddiad.

She told the choir: “You were really singing that from the heart and it has really touched us all in our hearts.”

The programme – which has average audiences of almost three million – will be broadcast as Japan prepares to host the Rugby World Cup, which kicks off in September.

Choir Musical Director James Llewelyn Jones said: “It is a real thrill to know that the choir will be seen and heard on the other side of the world. We feel so proud to represent the culture of Wales in such a popular programme.”
