THE sun was shining for a 'walk and talk' organised by an Oswestry man to commemorate Victorian mayors.

John Davies from Oswestry, who is a keen historian and member of Wrexham Cemetery Friends Group, gave a guided tour last month of the graves of Wrexham's mayors of years gone by.

Mayor Councillor Rob Walsh took part in the walk, stopping to view the grave of James Charles Owen who was in office between 1872-73 and 1877-78, and was in fact the person who purchased the Mayoral chain which is still worn today.

John was glad with how the day – which was also attended by army veterans and members of the public – went.

He said: "It was a lovely sunny day – the walk and talk went very well as a I received many compliments on the information I had.

"The Friends of Wrexham Cemetery hold other events during the year that we advertise on our website and our next History Walk is on July 30, 2019 and we welcome anyone to join us free or charge."

John is hoping to now find out some more information on the former Mayors of Oswestry.
