AN EX-SERVICEWOMAN from Flintshire is encouraging families to get active this summer and raise money for our armed forces community.

Alison Mowlem, from Buckley, served 9 years in the RAF which included an operational tour in Iraq and has since been working for the Royal British Legion for two years.

And Alison is urging families to take part in a walk in aid of the Legion which takes place next weekend.

With the summer holidays coming up, The Royal British Legion has the perfect event to get the kids out in the fresh air and off their electrical devices.

Liverpool Poppy Quest takes place on Sunday July 21 and is a relaxed, sponsored 10Km walk around the city, suitable for all abilities.

The walk starts from Williamson Square just a short walk from Central Station, you will be armed with a map, to navigate the trail and a set of questions to help you discover more about the city’s rich history.

Everyone who takes part gets a finishers medal and a T-shirt.

Alison said: “The Royal British Legion helps serving and former serving members of the armed forces and their families.

"Many people don’t realise how much the legion do to help the armed forces community and since working for the Royal British Legion I have met so many veterans that have benefitted from the services we provide.

"Sometimes it is just with the smallest of things like £15 so someone can have a haircut to prepare for a job interview, or £25 for emergency accommodation in a bed and breakfast. If anyone would like to speak to the Royal British Legion for help or advice they can call the contact centre number on 0808 802 8080.”

Dogs are welcome and should you want to walk alone, this is a great chance to make new friends too as you can meet up with fellow solo walkers at the start. Registration is £16 for adults and free for under 18s, and by using this exclusive code ‘FLINT50’ you can get a 50% discount.
