A SCHOOL in Bagillt have hit out at ‘mindless’ vandals who have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to their roof.

Tracey Jones, headteacher of Ysgol Merlynn, spoke to the Leader about her disgust to return to the school after the weekend (July 6 and 7) to find roof tiles had been smashed and littered about the school playground.

She said: “The tiles have been pulled up and thrown about like toys, some of them off the roof and onto the children’s playground – which is how we discovered the damage initially. It is going to cost thousands of pounds to repair, which could always be put towards providing new things or experiences for the children, and about three to four days of somebody’s time to mend the roof.

“The whole school community is devastated at the callousness and senseless damage.

“This incident has left the children and parents feeling rather upset that someone could do this to their school. Staff, including myself, have been out clearing up the mess left behind but this takes us away from our day-to-day work which just adds to the stress and nuisance caused by this mindless vandalism.”

Pictures sent to the Leader show that a significant portion of roof tiles have been removed during the incident and smashed up, both on the roof and on the ground below.

Ms Jones has said that the police have been very helpful since the incident took place at the school off Foel Gron.

She added that the school is covered in CCTV so North Wales Police have several images of those responsible.

“The local officers have been out to assure us that they are takin the matter seriously and are making progress with their investigation.”, she said.
