A NEW supermarket would not be built in a Wrexham village until work to improve a dangerous junction has been undertaken.

Aldi has confirmed that proposals they are looking to submit seeking to build a supermarket on the corner of Gresford Road and Straight Mile in Llay, will not see the store built until improvements have been made at the Crown crossroads.

The supermarket giant has sought to reassure villagers after community and county councillors raised concerns at their meeting last week that the development is six times bigger than that featured in proposals which formed part of a 300 home housing development on Gresford Road.

Aldi says that this application is separate - it is not part of the housing plan and is in a different location.

It is currently at the pre-planning application consultation stage.

A spokesman for the company said: “Aldi is aware that the consented housing development on Gresford Road included a 300m2 retail component which has not yet been developed. Our application for the corner of Straight Mile and Gresford Road is entirely separate from this masterplan and in a different location – which is why we plan to bring forward our own distinct full planning application.

“There is still a few days to go until our pre-application consultation period is over, and we are grateful for the feedback received so far.

"We know that traffic at the Crown crossroads has been a concern, and Aldi is clear that, if planning permission is granted, work on the store will not commence until the improvement works on the junction have been implemented, leading to a significant reduction in congestion.

“We know that there is no food store in this community, with many customers having to travel further afield to complete their weekly shop. A store in Llay will allow customers to save money not only on food, but also on travel, whilst representing a significant investment into the community.”

If given the green light once planning permission is sought from Wrexham Council, the discount retailer could create up to 40 new jobs at the store.
