A go-ahead crown green bowling club which runs 11 teams across three leagues and is celebrating its silver jubilee this year, has landed a sponsorship deal to help fund its junior coaching sessions.

Johnstown Bowling Club play in the Wrexham, Oswestry and Market Drayton Leagues and have more than 70 members playing in 11 teams.

They have now been sponsored by storage company, Lock Stock Self-Storage, who have two container storage parks in Wrexham.

The backing from the Denbigh-based business will go towards the sessions the club's qualified coaches run with local schools and towards the upkeep of the facilities in Bryn Lane, Johnstown.

There they boast one of the biggest crown greens in the area, 38 metres square, floodlit and with pop-up sprinklers though club greenkeeper Jono Shaw said: "We don't need to use them much at the moment."

Lock Stock commercial manager Jeff Woods said: "The club treasurer, Alan Davies, called in to our storage park in Ruabon Road in Wrexham and asked if we'd be interested in sponsoring them.

"I came down and had a look and was so impressed with what they have been doing and the fantastic facilities they have and so we agreed.

"Hopefully it will help them introduce local youngsters to the game and ensure that the club goes from strength to strength."

Johnstown Bowling Club was founded 25 years ago and until three years ago the clubhouse consisted of two portable cabins joined together - when the time came to move them the floor gave way and they promptly collapsed.

They now have a smart new clubhouse and sheltered viewing areas and Alan said: "We have done a lot of work here and we're very grateful for the support of Lock Stock.

"The club is doing well - our first team was promoted to the Premier Division of the Wrexham League this season and are currently mid-table and our second team are top of Division Three.

"We're very much a community club and rely on volunteers and local support and we work closely with the local schools and our coaching sessions with them attract up to 45 children to take part.

"It's a sport you can play at any time of life and we've got some very good juniors including Keira Edwards who plays for Wales."

Lock Stock Self-Storage also support East Parade Bowls Club in Rhyl and sponsor a range of local organisations and causes across North Wales.

They were launched in Denbigh in 1999 by brothers Nick and Shon Powell and Nick said: "We are always looking to diversify and to react to the market. The business started because we reacted to a demand and it has grown in response to demand.

"We are always looking at ways we can diversify and maximise the resources we have - you can't afford to stand still in business."

Lock Stock now has 2,900 containers at 18 sites across North and Mid Wales and the Border Counties and as well as offering units to hire on their sites they sell a range of used and new containers delivered by their specialist lorry - they also sell fireworks at Chester, Rhyl and Llandudno and online.
