VITAL work to modernise a Flintshire primary school has moved a step closer with a start date now in place.

Multi-million-pound work on Ysgol Glan Aber, in Bagillt, will be carried out by the Wrexham-based construction company, Kier, who are set to begin on July 15, 2019, Flintshire County Council have confirmed.

The council, in partnership with the Welsh Government, is investing over £2.3 million to turn Ysgol Glan Aber into a school fit for the 21st century.

That figure includes £1.3 million of funding from the Welsh Government to reduce infant class sizes through the creation of a new classroom.

It is hoped that this will allow teachers to devote more time and individual attention to each of their pupils, while the rest of the funding will go towards providing a new hall and dining facilities.

Leader of the Flintshire County Council and Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Ian Roberts said: “This is an extremely important investment in Ysgol Glan Aber and shows our commitment to securing funds to continue to improve and update our schools.

“The modern facilities will provide an inspirational learning experience for our schoolchildren, for our young people and for the wider community.”

Peter Commins, managing director at Kier Regional Building North West, added:

“We are absolutely delighted to continue our relationship with Flintshire and thrilled to be starting on site at Ysgol Glan Aber. The improvements will provide modern teaching and learning facilities for staff and pupils of the school for years to come.”

The scheme to make improvements to the Flintshire primary school is part of the Welsh Government’s ‘Reducing Infant Class Sizes Grant’ and the council’s ‘Capital Investment Programme’.
