APARTMENTS could be built on the land of a former community centre.

Residents in Caia Park are being consulted on potential plans to build more than a dozen apartments on the land where the former Kingsley Circle Community Centre stands.

Clerk of the estate’s community council, Michael Morris, who is also chair of Wrexham Council’s planning committee, said while no application has been submitted yet, the views of nearby residents are being sought.

He added that the proposals are for 16 one to two bedroom apartments.

The centre has stood empty for around five years after it was closed in April 2014 amid a round of savings made by Wrexham Council.

Caia Park Environmental Group were keen to take on the centre while Glyndwr University had previously been exploring the option of funding the facility with a view to using it as a base from which to build its community youth development work.

But the takeover fell through in late 2014, with the university confirming that while it had examined the possibility of taking over the centre, it was later decided not to pursue the venture.

At the time Wrexham Council had approached community councils to take over the running of community centres as part of an attempt to find a savings totalling £45 million.

Caia Park Community Council looked into whether they could support community groups looking to keep both the Pentre Gwyn and Kingsley Circle Community Centre’s open, but were unable to afford both.

Members decided to support the Pentre Gwyn Centre, providing funds to help the residents association during the first three years of taking it over. It is now fully run by the Pentre Gwyn residents association.

A planning application could be submitted for the Kingsley Circle site apartments proposal at a future date.
