A DISBANDED Connah's Quay football club will reunite for a special match in memory of a former teammate.

Andrew Baines died at the young age of 11 after he was diagnosed with leukaemia and as the year approaches what would have been his 30th birthday, his football team will reunite for a charity match.

Stan Tebble, former manager of the Wepre Rangers FC, said he was asked to do a reunion match and thought it fitting to make it in memory of Andrew Baines, who was the former goalkeeper.

He told the Leader: "About 20 years ago, we were at training one night and got a phone call saying Andrew had taken ill and from there he was admitted to hospital. It was confirmed a few days later that he had leukaemia.

"All the lads were at the funeral, it was very sad. He was a nice, bubbly lad, he was our goalkeeper.

"We were asked to do a reunion match and I thought it was fitting to do it in memory of Andrew because this year would be his 30th.

"I got permission from his parents and said it would be a charity do, a charity of Andrew's mums choosing. She wants it to go back into football because Andrew loved his football."

All funds raised from the event will be donated towards the Under 11s Connah's Quay Tigers team.

Stan added: "It will go towards the kids and the equipment. It's a lovely idea.

"I think it's good because it's putting it back into children's football which isn't funded a lot by anyone in particular. It will help the young team out and it's for the community as well.

"His parents were made up when we got in touch with them, just that someone was still thinking of him."

A raffle will also be held and an evening charity event from 7pm at the Connah's Quay Labour Club.

Those wishing to attend can contact Stan on 07922828199.

The former manager said: "We will be having a meeting at the Labour Club which will be when all the players will meet so if anyone wants to come and get tickets there it will be on June 19."

The event will take place on June 6 and Wepre Park and will see about 25 former players from the former age group - known as Wepre Jets and Wepre Spitfires - get ready for their kick off at 2pm.
