FAMILIES in Wrexham are being urged to apply for a school uniform grant.

Parents could be entitled to receive up to £200 to help cover the cost of school uniforms, equipment and sports kit.

The Welsh Government’s Pupil Development Grant (PDG) is targeted at learners who are entitled to free school meals or children who are looked after and Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths, is encouraging local residents to contact the local authority to find out if they are eligible.

The Welsh Government fund, which has doubled to over £5 million this year, not only supports families with the costs of school uniform and sports kit, but can also contribute to activities outside of school such as scouts or guides.

By targeting looked after children and learners entitled to free school meals, the Welsh Government hope the families most in need will be supported.

Eligible pupils must be going into reception class in primary school or Year 7 in secondary school. Pupils aged four or 11 in special schools, Special Education Needs (SEN) Units or Pupil Referral Units are also eligible.

Ms Griffiths said: “This fund will make a difference to local families living on low incomes, helping remove barriers and ease the financial burden associated with purchasing new school uniforms and equipment.”

“I would encourage any parents or carers who think they might be eligible to contact the local authority.”
