HUNDREDS of people turned up to enjoy their village's annual tradition over the weekend.

The Penyffordd and Penymynydd annual carnival returned on Saturday which saw £4,000 raised for the village War Memorial Institute.

Claire Metcalfe, chair of the carnival committee, said: "It went really well. We were just incredibly lucky that the weather changed last minute, it just makes such a difference to the day if it's not raining.

"We had a really great turnout, all of the village supported it and it was pretty busy all day.

"We had loads of great performances from the school choirs and dance groups."

The carnival was kickstarted with a parade through the village by Batala Bangor, a samba/reggae drumming band and from then on, attendees enjoyed an afternoon of live performances, stalls and a funfair.

Claire added: "Money raised will go towards supporting the War Memorial Institute in the village which is our central village hall. At the moment we are hoping to make some really big improvements to the building.

"I think it's really important to have that sense of community, it's something that everyone can use, we have toddler groups there and older adult groups, it's available for everyone. It's nice to have that and is a central part of the community.

"Our carnival has been going for decades, it's a very important village tradition. It's something we think is really important to keep going and we can only do it with the people volunteering to help out.

"We are only a small group who organise the carnival so we do really appreciate people helping out when they can.

"I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped out and those who turned up to enjoy the day."
