JUDO star Gemma Gibbons Burton joined dozens queuing in the rain to open Chester’s new Aldi store.

The Olympic silver medallist cut the red ribbon on Thursday morning (June 13) to officially open the company’s third store in the city on Parkgate Road.

She said: “It’s been an honour to be a part of Aldi’s store opening. I’ve had a great time talking to both the adults and children of Chester about healthy eating and my experience of the Olympics.”

To mark the occasion, Aldi brought back its famous Golden Ticket promotion, and Gemma handed out 250 prizes to the lucky customers in today’s queue.

The prizes range from the popular patio heater to cash vouchers to use in store.

The Parkgate Road store is the third Aldi to open in Chester and will be run by store manager Adam Raby along with a team of 28 colleagues from the local area.

Adam said: “It’s been a fantastic morning here at our grand opening. It was lovely to meet our new customers and I look forward to meeting more of the community in the coming weeks.

“I’d also like to say a big thank you to the wonderful Gemma Gibbons Burton for being a part of our celebrations.”

Customers visiting the store can take advantage of Aldi’s ‘Specialbuys’, which are available every Thursday and Sunday.

This week, the store will be offering a wide range of garden goodies, including a jumbo paddling pool for £12.99, a dinoland play centre for £29.99 and other outdoor games including footballs and tennis sets from £2.99.

The new store will be open Monday to Saturday 8am to 10pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Meanwhile, one of the existing stores on Bumpers Lane closed on Wednesday (June 12) while it is demolished and rebuilt. It is expected to reopen next summer.

Donna Denton, store operations director at Aldi, told The Standard that staff from Bumpers Lane have been transferred to the new store alongside an additional 10 new employees.
