WORK is to be carried out on Wrexham AFC's town centre training ground as their move to the Groves site is set for 2020, the club has confirmed.

The Reds have issued a statement to inform supporters of some work scheduled to be carried out on the Nine Acre training site.

A club spokesman said: "The club released a statement during December 2018, regarding Wrexham County Borough Council supporting our proposal for a new purpose built training facility located at the site of the old Groves School.

"The first stage of this process is due to commence next week whereby a council contractor will start work on digging bore holes on the Nine Acre site to provide data on ground conditions.

"These works will be carried out on the lower training pitches used by our under 18 squad and will be complete in time for their return to pre-season training.

"Once these bore holes are in place, they will be backfilled with pea gravel then the top soil and turf will be carefully replaced to ensure our players can safely train on the surface.

"Subject to approvals, addressing current conditions and legal requirements for the new site, it is hoped that Wrexham AFC can begin training at the Groves site as early as 2020."

He added: "The proposal is to create a purpose built training venue that would include 2 brand new pitches suitable for a professional football club with one of the two pitches modelled on the Racecourse playing surface.

"This is the next step in reinstating the infrastructure needed for future success.

"We have been working to build a long lasting positive partnership with Wrexham Council and the Groves site has huge potential for us.

"The proximity to the Racecourse and the town centre location means that Wrexham AFC can remain right at the heart of the town and community.

"The plans do not include the listed Groves School building itself which will remain an asset in the councils education department, surplus to requirements."
